Book Review: The Jesus Book

The Jesus Book by Stephen Elkins and illustrated by Claudine Gevry is the ultimate Who, What, When, Where, and Why book about Jesus and his life. Kids often know Bible stories, but don’t always understand how they directly relate to their lives. This book explains just what these stories mean at a level children can really understand. The book explains who Jesus is, what Jesus did, what Jesus taught, when it happened, where it happened, why it happened and how it happened. Each one to two page spread, paired with beautiful illustrations, answers these questions. This book also includes a 30-song CD of children singing favorite songs about Jesus.

This is truly a must have for any Christian family with young children. My daughters, ages 3 and 5, really enjoy this book but I believe children up to about age 8 or 9 would get a lot from this book. In fact, I think a lot of adults would even gain a better understanding of Jesus from reading this book! It is nice that each topic is concise, allowing you to easily cover it in one sitting. The illustrations are colorful and fun (one page with the timeline of Jesus’ life even looks like Candy Land). It even includes maps with questions about the areas on the maps. The music CD is an added bonus and my girls love to hear the children singing the songs. This would make a nice gift for birthday, Christmas, first communion, or anytime.
