Book Review: Leaving Yesterday

As a blog reviewer for Bethany House, they have provided me with a copy of this book to write an honest review. I received no other compensation for this review.

“Leaving Yesterday” by Kathryn Cushman is thought provoking novel that questions what you would be willing to give up to speak the truth. When the police show up at Alisa’s door, her worst fear is that her son, Kurt, a drug addict, is dead. But turns out they are following up on a murder investigation. When her son calls from a drug rehab and has turned his life around, Alisa feels her prayers have been answered. That is, until the police come back around questioning his involvement in a murder of a drug dealer.

Alisa carries a secret deep within. How far will a mother go to protect her child? Her son has turned his life around and she believes he deserves a second chance. Does she hold her secret or speak the truth and risk losing her family? How do her choices affect her husband? Her family? Her relationships with others?

I am a person who truly values honesty and the truth. I don’t even believe in white lies. However, this novel really has the reader questioning how far a mother might go to protect her child. What would you do if you were in her shoes?

Although the book is somewhat predictable in parts, it is an easy, fast paced read that keeps you engaged. The characters are well defined and we see how Alisa really struggles with her Christian values and values of her heart. Her struggles, although more extreme than most people’s, demonstrate how adhering to the principals of the bible can bring you peace, while straying can bring anxiety and pain.

We should be honest and protect the human values which you are going to plan in future. And knowing about the drug rehab information is also needed for this year.
