Book Review: Dancing with My Father by Sally Clarkson

Dancing with My Father by Sally Clarkson reminds us that we can have a life filled with joy. Sally Clarkson points out when we first come to Christ, the joy we have for him. As life goes on, many of us start making statements like, “I’ll be happy when…I have a child, when the kids are out of diapers, when we make more money, etc.” and our joy slowly subsides as we are burdened with our day to day living. As women, we are often burdened with to-do lists and experience many disappointments. Clarkson begins exploring through prayer how to have deep rooted joy, even in difficult times.

Through the use of biblical teachings, stories of many women and thought-provoking questions, Clarkson helps women to understand that they can have the joy and peace that God wants us to have.

I found this book very inspirational in helping me to consciously choose joy daily. As an older mother of two young children, I wake up achy, tired with a to do list a mile long, but reminding myself throughout the day to live in joy, changes everything. The biblical quotes really drove home the point that God wants us to live in joy—something I really hadn’t given much thought to in the past. This is an easy to follow book, but I wouldn’t necessarily say it is a quick read as you will want to allow for a lot of thought and reflection while reading.
