Book Review: Eat Your Peas Daughter

The title was the first thing that caught my eye.  Eat Your Peas Daughter, A little wisdom and a lasting promise! by Cheryl and Mom Karpen told me a lot.  How many times do we tell our children to do something that is good and healthy for them?  This "3-minute forever book" does just that.  It gives plenty of tidbits of wisdom that are good for you.

Author Cheryl Karpen invited her mother, Julia, to write this book with her as she feels she is part of Julia's garden--something her mother planted, pruned and cultivated into a "stronger, straighter and more resilient" woman.

The book itself is a small (about 7") square hardbound book with a textured cover.  Inside, the pages are a thick textured paper, almost like watercolor paper, which beautiful designs and decorative fonts.  The designs are floral, leaves, vines and hearts. The appearance alone draws the reader in.  The words of wisdom on the pages are short and sweet.  There are tidbits such as, "Begin each day with thoughts that bring out the best in you...Today I will... Yes, I can..I am grateful for..." and "Sometimes life doesn't go as planned and not getting what we want becomes a blessing in disguise.  There is a plan for you.  Have faith.  Be patient, and most of all, Believe."  The book contains two biblical quotes, Psalm 127:3, Children are a gift from the Lord... and Jeremiah 29:11, For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord along with the quote from Henry Ward Beecher, "There are only two lasting bequests we can hope to give our children.  One of theses is roots, the other is wings."

This is a beautiful book to give to girls from about the third grade well into young adult years.  Despite the title, I don't think it is necessarily deemed a book that only a parent could give to a child, but would be appropriate for anyone who cares about a girl or young woman.  The first pages of the book begin with, "If you ever need someone to talk to...I promise to be there for you..."
