Review and Giveaway: Pretty Neat--the buttoned-up way to get organzied--CLOSED!

Pretty Neat is one book I couldn’t pass up, especially since I am striving to be more organized.  Written by Alicia Rockmore and Sarah Welch, this book discusses things like “org porn” which makes me laugh from the get-go.  Org porn is, “That glossy, airbrushed fantasy world where everything is pristine, serene, and perfectly in order, sort of like Playboy, but with chore charts and name-plated cubbyholes.”  And it is everywhere you look these days—TV, magazines, etc.

My husband used to joke before we had company that we had to have the “fake house.”  You know, where you rush around to put everything is in its place.

Well, since I have had kids, the fake house no longer exists.  But yet I am inundated with emails, television shows (HGTV being the biggest culprit), and magazines with pristine houses where not a toy is out of place.  And you wonder, do kids really live there?  And sometimes I visit friend’s houses and wonder how they do it.

Pretty Neat make an attack on this pristine standard of living and encourages readers to establish a new standard instead of holding yourself to the org porn standard.  They found, when interviewing very successful women about organization, that all of them did not consider themselves to be great organizers because they had such high standards of organization—one of near perfection.  The authors suggest that you develop an new standard to be imperfectly disorganized, which means letting go of the “notion that everything must pass inspection by the organizational police…”   They encourage shortcuts that allow for a little bit of messiness.

They authors then offer various ways of prioritizing and taking charge of your organization.  They offer shortcuts and suggestions to help you be more organized, both at home and work.  They interview various women who express how they handle things.  They even explain how to master home-cooked meals!  I really like the chapter about making homemade meals.  The authors offer very a lot of great, true suggestions that I have implemented over the years.

I really enjoyed reading this book.  I have always tried to have a “gold” standard when it came to organizing my life, but since children, that standard has been thrown to the wind.   I had developed a new standard that allowed for some messes and clutter.  But not too much, because too much clutter stresses me out.  However, since I started homeschooling this past year, the messes/clutter seemed to be growing out of control and starting January, I began a different approach to dealing with it.  I have tried to abide by the touch it once rule, where I try to only touch a piece of paper one—in other words, deal with it right away.  Of course, that isn’t always feasible, but I have incorporated some of the suggestions in the book, such as immediately go through the mail and toss the junk into the recycle bin.

I think the authors offer some pretty good, practical advice for dealing with organization at home and work, prioritizing your time, clearing clutter, making schedules, and involving others.  I saw myself in many ways in this book.  I laughed and learned and ended up with a totally different perspective on getting organized. This is a quick and easy read that will offer you  great organizational help!

I follow you on GFC. The area that stresses me out most is my "office." It is the spare bedroom and has become the junk room! YIKES!

I follow via gfc. Our home office is the source of most of the stress in our marriage, lol. Dh and I have different organizational styles, plus he is a 13 inches taller than mem so he tends to stir things out of my reach without thinking.
