Giveaway: MathBlaster/JumpStart Membership CLOSED

I am all for fun, education games for kids on the computer, especially math.  I think historically, math has been pretty boring in our country, when really, it is something that can be quite fun and exciting.  I was happy to see that Knowledge Adventure, creator of www.Jumpstart.com, has launched a new browser-based virtual world at www.MathBlaster.com for children ages 6-12.

Let me first start with the pros of MathBlaster.   MathBlaster is space related, which children love.   Initially, I wondered if my girls would be interested in it with the space theme as opposed to something cute and fluffy, but they love it.  The scene is a space station and the graphics are incredible!  Wow!  This is top notch stuff here.  Children get to create their own avatar, called Blasters, for their space cadet role.  They get to choose from a variety of cool looks--from pink hair to three eyes.  My daughters really have fun picking bizarre choices.  They also had fun with the name chooser.  You can also make friends with other space cadets (BFFs).

After completing arcade-style challenges and completing various missions, the Blasters become members of the Intergalactic Space Patrol.  Here, they explore a world in the future and travel to new planets, while discovering various alien races.

The game very engaging, from the graphics to the tasks at hand in the various games to the “Red Alerts” that periodically go off.  Even just walking around and looking at things is fun.  There are a variety of games from racing, to training simulators to shoot ‘em up games.

In addition, with your membership to MathBlaster.com, you are able to access JumpStart.com.  Another benefit is that you can sign up all your children under your account without paying extra.  It is also nice that Math Blaster has their own blog at http://blog.mathblaster.com for information about the latest additions to the game.

Now for the cons:  Children must log in using an email address (which of course is the parents, who signed them up) and a password (also the parents).  It would be better if kids had a separate log-in.

There were also a lot of places to explore that led to nothing.  I imagine there are plans to add more games to these areas in the future.  It also could be a little tricky (for me and my daughters) to navigate around using the arrow keys.  I think that is more just something you get better at with more practice.

The most disappointing thing is the limited number of games that use direct math skills. Some of the games do compel you to use some problem solving skills, but as far as games where you use or practice skills such as addition/subtraction, multiplication/division, etcetera, they were very limited.

Overall, though, this site is VERY fun for kids and has great potential as they add more and more games.  My 7 year-old was very intrigued with it and really enjoys playing the games on it.  My four year old enjoyed watching big sis play, too!
