The Most Important Thing My Mother Taught Me

With Mother's Day just around the corner, I find myself thinking about my own mother.  I have often said that if I could be half the mother she was, I would consider myself a great mother.  I strive to be as good of a mother as my mom has been to me.  By example, my mother has taught me a great deal about parenting.

Looking back, I realize that it wasn't "big" things that made my mother a good mother, but all the little things.  My mother took the time and effort to make things special for us.  On my 5th birthday she made a purple icing (which in 1970 wasn’t an easy feat) for my cake.  She sewed special clothing for me.  She instilled traditions in our family that I have passed on to my children.  She always sat down with me every day after school and talked to me.  She taught me to work hard, be independent and build my own happiness.

When I sit and think of my mother, I don’t remember the big gifts or the big events, but I remember the special, little things that she did.  As Mother Teresa once said, "We can do no great things, just small things with great love."  My mother taught me the most important lesson in parenting—it is the little things that make the difference.
