Some define the preteen years as 8 and up. By this definition, I almost have a preteen. Preteen or not, she is growing up. I wouldn't necessarily say I am overprotective, but I definitely do have ideas about what I want my daughter to be exposed to at a young age so she can grow to have a strong character and good moral values. I don't want her focus to strictly be about fashion and boys, but about growing and developing strong friendships and relationships, while taking care to look nice.
I had heard about Discovery Girls, a magazine created by girls for girls 8 and up (there is also a middle school edition, too). This magazine came about from a mother who was looking for something for her 8 year daughter but she was unable to find anything age appropriate that dealt with the issues that tween girls face. In just 10 short years, the magazine subscription has hit over a million! And it is no wonder--it is a great magazine that empowers girls, helps them to build confidence and friendships and lets them know they are not alone during the difficult growing up years. The magazine has fun sections, such as embarrassing stories, quizzes, Ask Ali and crafts. Each magazine features 12 real girls from a state and real girls are featured on the cover.
Discovery Girls has also published a series of 4 books, the Fab Girls Guides. The four titles are the Fab Girls Guide to Sticky Situations, to Friendship Hardship, Questions Answered and Getting Through Tough Times. I read through The Fab Girls Guide to Sticky Situations and it is filled with what could be real scenarios that young girls face these days and how to handle them.
Both the magazine and the book give excellent advice to young girls. There isn't a huge focus on looks and fashion. The articles about looks and fashion are very age appropriate. Parents are sure to appreciate the advice given in the magazines as the advice is always positive.
