Great Family Fun @CincinnatiCyclones Ice Hockey Game

Cincinnati Cyclones
My family is pretty active.  Seems like we are always on the go for some fun outing or event.  One place that I had never thought to take the kids was to an ice hockey game.  When the opportunity arose for us to go to see the Cincinnati Cyclones, I thought about it.  I have young girls, after all, would they like it?  I had been promised it would be a great time for the entire family, so I said yes.  Surprisingly, it didn't take much to convince my kids that they would have fun.

So, last night we headed out to our first hockey at the US Bank Arena in Cincinnati.  I was pleased at how easy it was to get there and get parked.  There was plenty of parking in the garage very close to the arena.  This was good since it was cold out and everyone knows how much I hate the cold.  Getting into the arena and to our seats was easy.  All the employees were friendly and cheerful.

There was definitely excitement in the air, and I noticed right away that the girls picked up on the the vibes.  Their faces looked eager.  Since it was Kids Jersey T-shirt Night, they each got a free t-shirt on the way in.

As the game was about to start, most all the lights went off, creating a fun, dark atmosphere for a minute before they came back on with upbeat music.  Throughout the game, fun music played on and off; songs from back in mom and dad's day to songs kids love today.  I heard Journey Don't Stop Believing as well as Gangnam Style.  And when Gangnam Style played, I think every kid in the arena was out of their seats dancing.

Between periods and stoppage of play, there were fun things going on;  music, giveaways and Twister, the mascot, tossing out t-shirts.  There was even a marriage proposal!  (The girls were tickled about this!)  We also loved "musical tubes" where selected children went on the ice to play a game of musical chairs--only they had blow-up tube chairs.  As the music stopped, they slid all over to try to get into a tube chair.  It was fun to watch!  Chuck-a-puck was also fun to watch.  Fans purchased pucks and tossed into the arena.  The fan whose puck landed closest to the center won a prize.

And of course, what would an ice hockey game be without a fight and someone sitting in the penalty box?  That being said, there was just one fight, nothing over the top.  Overall, the quality of play was good.

I can't begin to tell you how much fun we had and how much the kids loved the game!  My husband was great at explaining the game to them and they followed along, enjoying all the action.  There were tons of kids and families there.  The game was fast paced and doesn't compare to seeing it on TV.  Live is so much better!  Even the Cyclones losing in overtime, didn't put a damper on the evening.  My kids are now definitely hockey fans and can't wait to catch the next game!

The kids enjoyed a surprise visit from the mascot, Twister.
I also had the opportunity to meet a couple other local bloggers.  Nedra over at Adventure Mom and I are in a blogging group together, but hadn't met yet.  And I was already a follower of Amy's blog over at Family Friendly Cincinnati.  (Hope over and visit these lovely ladies!)

I always wanted to see a live hockey game, I think it is pretty exciting on TV so live must be great. Looks like you all had a great time!

What a fun family night! I've never even thought about going to a hockey game. I guess I would have thought it would be a little slow. Now I see that I'm all wrong! We're going to have to check out hockey! and since Cincy is the closest place, guess we'll be taking a road trip!

What an absolutely fantastic night it looked like you had. We used to go the the ice hockey matches in the UK all the time before the kids came along and spent our money. Our ice hockey is nothing compared to your amazing type, the kids would love to fly over and watch a real game !!

We have a hockey team here, but I've always thought it would be slow for the kids, but I might have to change my mind now. Hope our team is as fun as this one seems!

My kids would certainly love to go to a live hockey game. And it sure looks alot more fun than the baseball game we went to last year. It was a little SLOW.... :-)
