Crab of the Day: The Principal Is Not Expecting Your Call...

My readers probably aren't aware that I have a part-time job.  A good portion of my job requires that I contact schools.  I have learned something interesting over the past few days.  Unless the principal of public schools is expecting your call, they will NOT take it.  That blows my mind away because when I call, I just say my name--I don't say who I am with.  For all they know, I am a parent of a child attending the school.  And with the very common last name I have, Williams, I am fairly certain that just about every school has a child with the last name of Williams.  I am never questioned whether I am a parent or with a company.  Just told, "The principal is not expecting your call."  What if I was a parent?  Would I have to make an appointment to contact the principal?  Are you serious?

And yet schools complain about lack of parental involvement in schools...

I have one in preschool and 2 in high school, I can't believe that! I mean I understand that not everyone can take every single call, but if they are not busy with students or something important you'd figure they would take calls. Your right about parent involvement. They want you to be involved with your child's education, as every parent should be. I'm lucky with my youngest principal, she is awesome! We've gotten to know her well since my youngest started preschool, my daughter is a crier in the morning. So EVERY morning Ms. Green is waiting for us to arrive so she can walk Haedyn in. Ms. Green has always made herself available when we need her. As for calls I haven't had to call and talk to her yet. But eventually I will and I'm curious to see if I get the "she wasn't expecting your call". I'm newer to your blog but am really enjoying all the info! Thank you (:

My job also requires me to call schools. I don't always talk to the principal, sometimes a superintendent or a secretary, but they have ALWAYS requested my company to contact them. I get the same response sometimes, even when I say that the person had contacted us originally. It is frustrating because if I can't talk to the person I can't do my job. Also if I leave a message most do not return my call so I have to call again. The other day I called and the secretary refused to take my phone number because her phone had rang again after I had called. I guess it was more important to answer the new call than to deal with the person that had called first. It's amazing how rude some people can be!

Are you serious ?!. I can't believe it. I don't think it's rude, it's more than that. What if your child had a problem and you had to call the principal urgently !. How come a parent who wants to contact the principal of his child's school has to make an appointment first. I understand that he may be busy to take every call but at least the secretary should take you info and ask you what you want and whether it's urgent or not.

I think that this is inappropriate because I think that the Principal is always so supposed to be available! I can not believe that they will not give a call to the Principal. This is so wrong!
