7 Tips Keeping Cool in Your Kitchen #cooking

With summer upon us and the weather finally warming up, our kitchens are also heating up.  Too keep your cool in the kitchen, try these tips:
  • Plan your menu according to the weather.  Avoid using your oven or stovetop on the hottest days.  Instead, consider grilling or making crockpot meals.  Another thought is to make meals that are served cold.  For dessert, consider no-bake desserts.
  • Instead of heating up your oven, use a small toaster oven when possible.  Surprisingly, many items fit in these small ovens, including pizzas!
  • Use the microwave to heat or cook whenever possible.
  • If you need to turn the oven on, try to do it in the mornings or evenings.
  • If you turn your oven on, plan to cook multiple items at the same time or back to back.  This saves you from turning the oven on and preheating it again.
  • Only run your dishwasher in the early morning or late evening.
  • Turn off any lights you don't need.  Yes, lights emit heat.

Don't forget about your fridge.  When your fridge motor runs more, it add additional heat to the kitchen. Here are a couple tips to keep the fridge from running so much.

  • Don't stand with the door open.  Know what you want, remove it and close the door as quickly as possible.
  • Keep foods organized.  Basic staple items kept in the same place will make them quicker to find.
  • Need to thaw something?  Remove it from the freezer and place it on an upper shelf of the refrigerator the day before.  While it thaws, it will also cool the fridge.
Remember, if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen and make reservations!
